If you are living in Portugal with a residence permit, it’s important to stay up to date with the renewal process. In 2025, the renewal rules depend on
when your current residence permit expires. Below, we explain step by step what you need to do.
For Residence Permits Expiring
on or before June 30, 2025.If your residence permit expired any time between
February 2020 and June 2025, here’s what you should expect:

Email NotificationYou will receive an official email from AIMA. Invitations are sent out in chronological order, starting with the oldest expired permits (from February 2020) and continuing until June 2025.

Access the Services PlatformOnce you receive the notification, you can log in to
services.aima.gov.pt. Use the “Renew residence permit” button to review and confirm your personal details.

Request and Pay the DUCAfter confirming your data, request a
Unified Payment Document (DUC) through the same platform. You must complete the payment within
10 working days.

Biometric Appointment (if required)You may receive an email invitation for an appointment at one of the EMAIMA offices to provide updated biometric data. This step will only be required if your biometric data or passport has already expired.

Clear Debts and Prepare DocumentationMake sure all outstanding debts are settled and that you have submitted all the necessary supporting documents.
For Residence Permits Expiring
after June 30, 2025.If your residence permit expires after June 30, 2025, the process is slightly different:

Apply Through the Renewal PortalSubmit your renewal request directly via the
Renewal Portal.

Settle Debts and Upload DocumentsYou will need to settle any outstanding debts, pay the renewal fee, and upload the required documents (which may vary depending on the type of your original residence permit).

Biometric Data Only If NeededYou will only be called for a biometric appointment if your application is approved and your biometric data or passport has expired.
- Those whose permits expired between February 2020 and June 2025 will be contacted by AIMA directly via email.
- Those with permits expiring after June 2025 must be proactive and submit their request via the Renewal Portal.
