Step-by-Step Guide to Renewing Your Residence Permit in Portugal (2025 Update)
If you are living in Portugal with a residence permit, it’s important to stay up to date with the renewal process. In 2025, the renewal rules depend on when your current residence permit expires. Below, we explain step by step what you need to do.

For Residence Permits Expiring on or before June 30, 2025.
If your residence permit expired any time between February 2020 and June 2025, here’s what you should expect:

👉 Email Notification
You will receive an official email from AIMA. Invitations are sent out in chronological order, starting with the oldest expired permits (from February 2020) and continuing until June 2025.

👉 Access the Services Platform
Once you receive the notification, you can log in to services.aima.gov.pt. Use the “Renew residence permit” button to review and confirm your personal details.

👉 Request and Pay the DUC
After confirming your data, request a Unified Payment Document (DUC) through the same platform. You must complete the payment within 10 working days. Here is a guide on how to pay.

👉 Biometric Appointment (if required)
You may receive an email invitation for an appointment at one of the EMAIMA offices to provide updated biometric data. This step will only be required if your biometric data or passport has already expired.

👉 Clear Debts and Prepare Documentation
Make sure all outstanding debts are settled and that you have submitted all the necessary supporting documents.

For Residence Permits Expiring after June 30, 2025.
If your residence permit expires after June 30, 2025, the process is slightly different:

👉 Apply Through the Renewal Portal
Submit your renewal request directly via the Renewal Portal.

👉 Settle Debts and Upload Documents
You will need to settle any outstanding debts, pay the renewal fee, and upload the required documents (which may vary depending on the type of your original residence permit).

👉 Background Check
AIMA will review your criminal record, precautionary and security measures, as well as your living conditions in Portugal.

👉 Biometric Data Only If Needed
You will only be called for a biometric appointment if your application is approved and your biometric data or passport has expired.

  • Those whose permits expired between February 2020 and June 2025 will be contacted by AIMA directly via email.
  • Those with permits expiring after June 2025 must be proactive and submit their request via the Renewal Portal.
Checking the list of required documents and preparing correctly for your renewal application is absolutely essential.
